It seems that Europe has had its best times. The financial and the debt crisis threaten the common European project. Therefore it is necessary to answer the question if it is really possible to develop a common European identity. The paper deals with the pros and cons of this idea from a historical and a systematic point of view. It denies that there is a necessary path to a common European identity and claims identity and difference nearly equal concerning the European perspective.
