Author Guidelines
GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
From issue 72 onwards, the formal requirements for manuscripts to be published in Darbai ir dienos (Deeds and Days) have been altered. Please be aware of changes in the way quotations and references are handled: footnotes (except as noted below) no longer appear at the bottom of the page below the text in which the footnote number is indicated; they and all references are placed at the end of the published article or of the listed unpublished sources. There are new requirements relating to the structure of articles as well.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Please load your manuscript onto the Apache OpenOffice journals platform https://ejournals.vdu.lt/index.php/DiD/about as a Microsoft Word or RTF (docx, doc) document. The open journals system allows your article to be submitted along with the data on which your research is based. We suggest submitting these data together with the manuscript in separate files. If you have any questions, please contact Nerijus Bakas at <nerijus.bakas@vdu.lt>.
The manuscript is to be submitted with a declaration that it is original and was not published earlier or submitted to other publishers. If the manuscript is resubmitted after corrections have been made, it is necessary to submit the original version and the version with the visible changes made in it, as well as the authors’ comments in those cases in which the reviewer’s suggestions were not followed.
Vytautas Magnus University thereupon concludes a licence agreement with the authors according to which the latter give VMU the right to use their work without compensation.
Articles sumitted for publication should not exceed 40,000 characters (with spaces) in length (including abstracts, references, and bibliography at the end of the article). Information about sponsors, acknowledgments, original fragments of translated citations, and various comments may be included in footnotes at the bottom of the appropriate pages or at the end of the article. The submission of longer texts should be cleared with the editor first.
Texts for publication should be submitted with one-and-a-half spacing and in 12-point Times New Roman font. Articles in Lithuanian must be submitted with abstracts and keywords in both Lithuanian and English. Articles in English, French, German, or Polish must be submitted with abstracts and keywords in Lithuanian. The author’s full name, surname, and institutional affiliation should be indicated at the top of each article; while at the end the following additional information should be provided: the author’s or authors’ academic degree(s); their institution and duties; and their e-mail addresses. The latter information will be published in a separate section on the authors contributing articles to the relevant issue of this journal.
A research article should contain an introduction wherein the purpose or goals, the methods, the novelty, the originality, or the theoretical or practical value of the research are clearly identified; followed by the main portion of the article and concluding remarks. These requirements do not apply to polemical or essayistic articles nor to critical reviews or source publications.
QUOTATIONS AND REFERENCES
Quotations longer than one sentence should be distinguished by a smaller font in a new paragraph; while shorter ones, when only a part of a sentence is quoted, are enclosed within quotation marks. The author(s) of the source quoted is (are) indicated in the following order: opened parentheses, last name(s), year of publication, colon, page number(s), closed parentheses; for example: (Berlin 1979: 255), (Greenblatt 2005: 183), (Bauman, Donskis 2016: 5–6).
When in a given year two or more works by the same author are published, they should be indicated in the text as follows: (Donskis 2016a: 139) and (Donskis 2016b: 73). At the end of the article the bibliographical annotation of these sources should be presented as follows:
Donskis, Leonidas. 2016a: Šetenių užrašai = notes Sztejnieński. Kraków; Budapest: Austeria.
Donskis, Leonidas. 2016b: Малая карта опыта: предчувстия, максимы. Перевод с литовскогоТомасаЧепайтиса.
When an archival document without an author is quoted, then next to the quotation a version of the document’s name shortened to 4 or 5 words should be given in parentheses; for example, (Eustachijus Valavičius’s letter 1604: 71), (Court officer Juozapas Šrodovskis’s report 1766: 1051–1051v.).
At the end of the article the bibliography of the source is given as follows:
Eustachijus Valavičius’s letter: June 30, 1604, Eustachijus Valavičius’s letter to Justus Lipsius, Leiden Universiteitsbibliotheek, Lip. 4, l. 71.
Court Officer Juozapas Šrodovskis’s report: June 30, 1766,
Juozapas Šrodovskis’s report, Vilnius District Land Court Register 1765-1766, LVIA, SA, b. 4216, l. 1051–1051v.
All information about a source or archival document is placed at the end of a bibliographic listing alphabetically arranged of literature used; for example:
In this journal bibliographic lists differ slightly depending on the source from which the published item is taken.
