Just in case you did not recognise the above acronym: it stands for InternationalYear of Indigenous Languages, as which the United Nations have declared 2019. Itis to be hoped that not only the readers of this journal will consider the declarationan apt and timely move. Like all symbolic gestures, it is prone to meet with somedegree of scepticism or cynicism regarding its impact, or even its rationale.However, in a domain where attitudes and awareness are of vital importance,having the IYIL will surely help language issues in claiming their fair share of global discourse.
