Abstract

This article presents the analysis of Baltic (mostly Lithuanian) labour migration into the depths of the Soviet Union during the late Soviet period. Based on the new, never published written and photographic material, the authors discuss how these Baltic labour migrants participated in the creation of infrastructure for the Western Siberian Tyumen region’s northern oil-gas complex and the construction of the city of Kogalym. The construction of this oil city is analysed in the general context of urban planning and the urbanization of cities in the North.
