BIOMASS STUDY OF COMMON BEECH (FAGUS SYLVATICA L.) IN MIXED PINE-BEECH STAND

Abstract

During the research, the biomass of beech, which grew in the Jurbarkas regional subdivision of the State Forest Enterprise in Mociškės and Viešvilė forest districts, in mixed pine - beech stands, was determined. A total of 40 trees ranging in diameter from 8.4 cm to 34 cm were used in the study. The diameter of the trees under study was measured at a height of 1.3 m, after that the trees were cut down with saws. The stem and branches were weighed on an electronic scale on homemade device. After receiving the data, a relationship was found between the diameter and the individual parts of the tree. The amount of carbon stored in each aboveground part of the tree was also calculated. Stem biomass was found to be related to diameter. The link between diameter and branch biomass was poorer as thick trees develop large branches due to less competition and position in the stand. On average, 154.4 kg of carbon was stored in one tree.
