Abstract

Organizations are transforming supply chains towards green, thus contributing to sustainable development and the European Green Course strategy. The growth of packaging as a structural part of the supply chain on a global scale is causing social and economic problems. The analysis of the scientific literature reveals the concept of green supply chain and the importance of green packaging as well as innovative packaging solutions. The concept of a green supply chain is multifaceted and complex. A green supply chain involves optimizing raw materials, supplies, stocks, goods, waste and information throughout the supply chain, focusing on environmental, social and economic factors. Product packaging is the final part of the product manufacturing process. Packaging and transportation are the biggest polluters of the green supply chain processes. Green packaging is a packaging method that assesses human health and the environment throughout the packaging's life cycle. Innovations in green packaging are possible through the development of: resource-efficient packaging design, packaging design that maximizes transport efficiency, packaging from non-hazardous materials, reusable packaging design, standardization of material and dimensional design. These innovations must be based on the concept of sustainable packaging logistics. The use of packaging that complies with the principles of green packaging requires time and financial resources. Despite the challenges, this is an important condition for successful business development. Green packaging is becoming a necessity for advanced businesses to have a negative impact on the environment.
