THE TRENDS OF LITHUANIAN FARM ACTIVITIES AND THEIR CONNECTION WITH THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM

Abstract

The aim of the article – based on the analysis of scientific literature and supported by statistical data, to reveal the impact of changes in Lithuanian farm activities on the local food system. The study shows that the organization of local food systems in Lithuania is directly related to the demographic and structural development of farms. Although the total number of holdings is decreasing, a slight increase in the number of young farmers indicates positive prospects for generational renewal. However, the growing share of retirement-age farmers and the slow generational turnover pose a risk to the continuity of the local food system, the implementation of innovations, and the diversity of production supply. Moreover, the increasing specialization in crop production and the declining share of livestock and mixed farms weaken the agroecological balance and may reduce the resilience and self-sufficiency of the local food system. The results highlight the need for targeted policies and support measures to ensure the sustainable development of local food systems.
