Abstract

The aim of the work is to assess the food production situation, according to which the level of ensuring food security in the Baltic countries will be determined. The article introduces the concept of food security, presents the main assessment methods that are used and the level of food security. Approaches to the problem of ensuring food security are examined and the existing problems of ensuring food security and their causes in the Baltic countries are analyzed in comparison with the average values of the European Union. The article presents the food production index, which shows a certain level of food self-sufficiency in the Baltic States. The research results show that between 2000 and 2020 the level of food production in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia is quite secure, but it is necessary to pay attention to the population at risk of poverty, because this population group cannot fully feed itself.
