Abstract

The tribological properties of lubricating oil are one of the key factors determining the efficiency and durability of mechanical systems. However, most scientific studies are limited to short-term analyses, while long-term experimental investigations remain relatively rare. In this study, SAE 0W–16 engine oil was investigated in three conditions: new, and used after 7000 km and 14,000 km of operation. The experiments were carried out using a four-ball tribological test. The tests were performed at a rotational speed of 1500 rpm under a cyclic loading regime. The friction torque was recorded throughout the entire test, while the wear scars were analyzed using microscopic methods. The results showed that the new oil exhibited more than a 30% lower friction coefficient and wear intensity compared to the used oil. The obtained results suggest that the changes in oil properties identified during long-term tribological experiments may have a significant impact on the evaluation of manufacturer-recommended oil change intervals.
