RESILIENCE OF SMALL FARMS: THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES

Abstract

Small farms are an important part of the agricultural sector, playing a significant role in rural vitality, food production, and social stability; however, their continuity of operations is hindered by various internal and external factors. Limited farm resources, market fluctuations, the impacts of climate change, restricted investment opportunities, and changing regulatory conditions increase the vulnerability and uncertainty of these farms. In this context, the issue of small farm resilience becomes particularly relevant in order to understand their ability to respond to shocks and adapt to long-term changes. The aim of the article is to analyse the factors reducing the resilience of small farms and to present solutions for strengthening resilience. The article discusses the theoretical aspects of small farm resilience by reviewing the concept of resilience in the context of agricultural systems and identifying the main aspects of resilience. Based on the analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, resilience is interpreted as a dynamic process encompassing the ability to withstand short-term shocks, adapt to long-term changes, and, where necessary, modify farming practices. The analysis of scientific sources also reveals that the resilience of small farms is influenced by the interrelationships of economic, environmental, and institutional factors, as well as by farms’ ability to apply different risk management and organisational strategies. The theoretical analysis enables a systematic evaluation of the preconditions for small farm resilience and provides a basis for further research aimed at strengthening the viability and sustainability of these farms.
