The phenomenon of magnate “marriage politics” has recently attracted growing scholarly attention. Researchers have highlighted the importance of advantageous family connections in building the economic, political, and social standing of magnate families. Matrimonial negotiations often represented informal power struggles over conditions such as dowry amounts, financial contributions, life-tenure contracts, and royal grants of property rights extended to spouses. These negotiations significantly affected family fortunes and political influence. The reconstructed network of familial ties reveals how information, influence, and money circulated among actors engaged in the negotiation process. This article focuses on these often elusive factors that shaped prenuptial agreements, using a case study of Michał Zdzisław Zamoyski’s marriages. Drawing on a rich collection of private correspondence and archival materials related to Zamoyski’s two marriages, this study reconstructs the behind-the-scenes dynamics of marriage negotiations and magnate ambitions in eighteenth-century Poland. The findings demonstrate the significant role of relatives, in-laws, and royal court connections in shaping matrimonial alliances, as well as the constrained agency of the nupturients themselves within these complex negotiations.
