This article examines how three newspapers from the western provinces of the Russian Empire in 1847—Tygodnik Petersburski, Kuryer Wileński, and Rigasche Zeitung— reported on associations. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, it explores how editors balanced the need to comply with censorship restrictions on the one hand and the strive to inform and to shape local identities on the other. The findings reveal how press discourse shaped civic imaginaries and perceptions of state–civil society relations.
