Survival Skills that Jesus Might Have Used: Theoretical Considerations of the Historical Context

Abstract

This study examines, through the prism of survival skills, an aspect of the historical portrait of Jesus that discusses the practical survival skills that Jesus and his disciples may have taught. Based on biblical references and the historical and natural reality of the time, the study seeks to identify the totality of Jesus’ survival skills, practical abilities, and knowledge. The analysis shows that survival skills were a daily necessity in the environment of that time, encompassing essential abilities: Jesus’ profession, described as a carpenter, provided the technical competence necessary for the manufacture of shelter and tools; the ability to navigate and predict the weather was vital for safe travel; references to Jesus’ presence in the desert indicate knowledge of how to find fresh water in nature; Some of Jesus’ sayings reflect knowledge of finding food in nature: fishing, gathering wild plants and mushrooms; some Gospel references indicate skills in making fire. This study confirms the reality of Jesus’ incarnation, enriches his portrait, and reveals details of Jesus’ historical portrait that have not been explored until now.
